University Attacked By 5,000 Of Its Own IoT Devices

in cybersecurity •  7 years ago

I can't really say I'm surprised by this. As a cyber guy, we know that IoT devices are typically not designed with security in mind. So, it makes sense that we will see these types of worms and botnets continue to plague networks which they are kept.

The recent announcement HERE about a school getting DDoS'd basically by their own IoT devices to include: vending machines, lights, and more.

One of the biggest things you can do for security in creating a separate (but connected) network for your embedded devices and IoT infrastructure. This is similar to how you should keep a public-facing website. They should be protected and "disconnected", yet connected to the main network you want them associated with.

Here's an example architecture that hopefully conceptualizes this a bit.

Haha, seriously, right?? I think we will probably see a lot more of this type of thing happen as the IoT movement gets bigger.

I'm not too surprised, but that's still very unfortunate! People really underestimate how much damage IoT can do.
