When AI meets facial recognition for the worst...

in cybersecurity •  6 years ago

Increasingly security systems are using facial recognition.

Whether it is to authenticate you on your latest Iphone or to get through a typical KYC/AML process when opening a crypto wallet account, the facial recognition mechanism allows for a smooth and convenient process... but how safe is it?

Using AI systems, malicious hackers could potentially harvest the large volumes of pictures you posted on social media and get enough information to steal your identity.

Over the last year it was shown how software like Social mapper or DeepLocker from IBM can use facial recognition to perform very targeted cyber attacks.

Last week if was also demonstrated by hackers how hand palm vein biometrics can be fooled.

As we are moving to an increasingly digital world, the risk of cyberattacks is increasing and so is their complexity.

We are now entering an era where AI is going to take a central place both in creating new types of attacks, but also in defending against them.

The big hype over Apple's facial recognition system concerned me.

It was also an indicator that Apple was not thinking about mid-term impact of such an application becoming mainstream.

And that was the damburst.

Most others followed... There's no way back, except certain markets (as opposed to individuals) reject facial recognition applications.

Can start with critical mass countries such as India or critical pockets such as western Europe and Russia.

I believe customers of these type of solutions would like to see comparisons of using facial, fingerprint, 2 factor  authentication etc and how they improve the security as well .

Are you prepared for that?

How central is cybersecurity to your digital transformation?
