GenAI and Insider Threats

Time to add GenAI to the toolset for Insider Threat’s methods of attack.

At a high school in Maryland, the athletic director was arrested for using GenAI tools to create a deepfake audio clip impersonating the school’s principle’s voice making racist remarks.

Totally fake, but the clip was released on the internet and went viral. Law enforcement determined it was the athletic director who used the deepfake to tarnish his boss’s reputation.

Will companies’ crisis, investigation, and forensic teams be ready to take on such challenges?

I recommend doing a tabletop exercise to identify areas for improvement. Additionally, revisit the company policy to make sure such behavior is strictly forbidden and cause for termination.

Workers should not be allowed to create synthetic representations (audio, image, and video) of other workers, partners, customers, or anyone related to the business.

Start getting comfortable. This is not the end of the train. Eventually, we should also be prohibiting the recreation or similarity of biometrics and body parts.
