When looking at my birth certificate I came across a shocking discovery.
No I did have a dad, no I was not adopted, no I was not left on a doorstep by some poor lady who wanted better for her child.
When it came to fathers Occupation I thought this must be the most unique Occupation anywhere, most kids there dads would be a doctor or lawyer, even a painter or singer but to my sheer horror my father Occupation was shocking, I was so embarrassed I could not tell people.
I made excuses up like I come from a one parent family, or my dad died during the war but I knew it would come out one day, now for the moment guess what my dad could have done for a living, no concentrate think hard.
No my dad was not a grave digger, no not a serial killer, no not a spy in the James Bond mode, well have you guessed yet.
My Dads Occupation now wait for it.
He was a Wood Measurer
What is a wood measurer I was so shocked, can you imagine if someone ask you what does your dad do.
So what I am looking for is can you get a worse occupation than that, go beat that.
I don't really know what the embarrassment is about. Unless you mean as a wee lad you didn't know what to tell your friends? Sure, I get that.
My dad was a carpenter and joiner. So after your dad measured the wood, mine would join them together?
Rome wasn't built in a day. Someone had to measure it first! :)
Civilisation salutes your dad for his sterling work.
Also, he created you. Now surely that's an accomplishment.

Was not that when I was at school our teacher asked if we could bring our birth certificates in, kids brought them in and there was electricians , carpenters brick layer the norms, what is a wood measurer. Might seem silly I came from poor family my dad had already run off with a younger women, he left 5 girls and 2 sons I think that had a part too

Well, I don't know if I can beat that, but I will tell you what I know.
My dad so far as I know from what I was told or heard talked about was that he worked, at first for General Electric. This supposedly was in the beginning of his career in I guess the 1950's. I was the first born, a year after they were married in 1955. But in 1962 my dad was transferred to Daytona Beach, Florida to work with NASA at the Kennedy Space Center at Titusville. But, the house we lived in was in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 1964 my dad was transferred to Huntsville to Work at Marshall Space Flight Center , then in 1969,(the year I graduated we moved to Houston, Tx and then back in the same year to Huntsville, Ala again.
I heard he worked with Werner Von Braun or in association with him. But, there was never any explanations of what his work was. The best I could get out of him was that he worked with computers. But that was all I knew and still know to this day. His job was a mystery. So I don't know if you beat me or not for strange dad jobs or not. In 1973 or 1974 , my dad was a casualty of a huge layoff and finally found work at the University of Alabama at Huntsville in the University's bookstore.
But, it is fun exchanging the history of our lives.

Mine starts looking shifty if you ask him his occupation. Ask him about any actual accounting records, and he's liable to get violent. :D
Genealogy is good for interesting job titles. Amid the dozens of "General Labourers" you're sure to find the odd "Stripper and Grinder", or even such a romantic and exciting one as "Retired Potato Salesman"...

So my dad was a butcher then a trainer of butchers. He got lots of lads jobs on the old YTS scheme in the 90's then went back to managing a chicken processing factory.
I'm lucky with my dad. Although I hardly saw him (because he was always working - even Saturdays) he taught me he value of money and although made a few bad investment decisions - he bought a few properties and did well off them.
He set me off to become a qualified financial adviser and a property landlord. Now I work for a tech company.
He put his three sons through university and my two brothers are software and construction engineers.
I was kinda embarrassed to say he was a butcher when I was a kid but now it's so cool! I never realised eating steak 3 times a week wasn't normal. 😀
