Daily Chicken June 11

Miss turkey is a lot sweeter lately. She lets me hold her sometimes. She used to be the most skittish, but since I've been handling her more regularly she's warming up to me a bit.

The plan for the chicken run is to bury a foundation of cinder blocks under the pallets and overlap some chain link fence to prevent critters digging in. I'll also be raising the coop up off the ground and beefing it up a bit. And lowering the top of the run so it doesn't stick up over the back fence. That may be the start of some water collection on the run. Looking at a budget of about $50, as I've got pallets-a-plenty and Sam gave me chain link from his place where they're replacing the fence.

After that, we'll be rebuilding the flock. We won't be raising chicks because Melissa doesn't want them in the house again. That increases the cost a bit, but we'll have eggs sooner. I'm looking forward to having a bigger flock again. We'll be shooting for around a dozen eggs a day, so probably 14 chickens. That'll give us plenty to sell to help cover feed costs.

I'll be adding wyandottes and Easter eggers for sure, and other breeds I'm not certain of. I want a pretty flock and multicolored eggs. All about prettiness lol

While I miss having the bigger flock, I am enjoying these two a lot. They're real sweethearts. And feed cost on two chickens is a lot less than on thirteen, which is helping with the rebuild efforts. Hoping to get to work next week after a farm conference with Greg Judy in Arkansas this weekend.

Easter eggers?! Awesome! We've been thinking about getting some of we can find any nearby, but we get nice green eggs from our Ameraucanas and light brown from the rest. Still fun to surprise my coworkers with. "How do they turn green??" Lol so used to seeing white eggs. I laugh because I used to be the same way. 🤣

Around here Easter eggers and ameracaunas are the same thing. Really looking forward to the Technicolor egg basket as we rebuild the flock!

I never checked out just layer breeds, as we needed the meat aspect. So we never were able to go for pretty eggs. Having just layers will up your ROL and 14 birds should provide a dozen a day, at least when there's enough light.

The light aspect is another part of the need for Easter eggers. My friend in the next town over said her EEs were the only ones that produced consistently through the winter, so I'm thinking probably seven or eight of them to help insure eggs year round.

Learning and balance and woohoo! Lol
