#FeedMe #2 [Updated] What bun? Bao? Pao?

in dailyfoodphotography •  7 years ago  (edited)

After parking my unicorn and waddling towards our local coffee shop to meet up with @georgethien for lunch, a comforting and familiar smell wafted through the air, instantly taking me back to my childhood.

However you like to call it, the Chinese steamed buns, or to be more precise, Hainanese bao are their specialty. The owners are of Hainanese decent and are super friendly people, they’re basically family-friends; given knowing my grandparents for years and watching me and my siblings grow up.

Steamed red bean paste buns, ground peanuts buns, char-siew buns and ground pork buns are on the menu, they don’t only do steamed buns but offers a wide variety of puff pastries and Chinese soup desserts as well.
Edit: the soup desserts were sold out so I couldn’t get any pictures of it.
Edit 2: I went for lunch today with my better half and they had the soup dessert.

A variety of baked buns with different fillings: char-siew, red bean paste and shredded coconut.

It’s been awhile since I last had it, I couldn’t help myself but to get one of their infamous da bao, or big bun. I have to say, even with the rising costs and what not, they still maintain their practice of making what is still considered to be a decent sized big bun.

The fillings of the bun is generally made up of a healthy serving of ground pork but the big bun also includes Chinese sausage, mushroom, a chunk of chicken breast and a slice of hard boiled egg.

Don’t mind the writing, I had to write like a kid on my phone.

I grew up coming here for breakfast with my grandparents on Sundays and afternoon tea every other day with my late mum after my grandparents passed. Coming back here definitely brings back some nostalgia, something I thought worth sharing with you.

Do check them out when you find yourself at Gaya Street one of these day if you haven’t already.

I know very well that Hainanese are good at making bun. My late maternal grandfather is Hainanese and they used to have coffee shop in Kasigui Pinampang in the 60s.

Unfortunately, non of my mom siblings know how to make one, including my mom...isk isk.

Thank you for sharing
