I am going to tell you here how to write a story quickly and with less pain than may be true for most people. The way to do this is not to obsess on any one particular story or type of story, but instead to write whenever you have something worth writing about, and then to write it out in a way that interests you. Every few days when some part of your mind begins nagging you that it wants out – out of a poem, essay, or article into a narrative – listen to it, because it knows what it's talking about.

There are three reasons why it might be difficult: it seems like a big project, you might have trouble keeping the story at just a few pages and you may feel self-conscious about 'making up a story when everyone else is writing about what happened… But it's easier than you think because stories all have the same patterns and structure. The trick is to use those patterns without getting stuck in them.
A short story is a form of writing. It tells about people, their lives, and the places they inhabit. The best part of it is that you don't have to write a lot of words to be able to make a fast impact on your reader. If you write something useful, useful for them, and useful for other readers who will come next time, then all you need to do is collect them in one piece and you're ready to go.
