Based on a new data study released by RAND Corporation with data from September 2016, out of 167,693 listings on the darknet only 811 were weapons related. Only 332 were for actual firearms, while 218 were for digital products like firearms and explosives DIY guides, and 178 listings were for ammunition. Of the actual firearms 84% were for pistols, 10% were for rifles, and 6% were for submachine guns.
60% of these guns were from the US, while Europe trailed with about 23%. Alphabay (now taken down) was the number one firearms darknet market, with Dream Market, Valhalla, and Hansa trailing. Many listings were available to global buyers, and the inherently small scale marketplace for firearms on the darknet tailored the online arms trade to individual buyers from all around the world. This data was collected with a data scraper known as DATACRYPTO that gathers relevant data buy combing darknet marketplaces. Considering that for every 100 people in the US, there is 112.6 guns, it is safe to say darknet marketplaces play an infantile role in proliferating small arms trade across the world.

It seems anything that makes it harder for people to be tracked gets painted in a bad light. Its like Bitcoin, anyone I mention it to says "oh yeah isn't that used by criminals on the internet"

One could argue that the blockchain of cryptocurreny actually makes it harder to be anonymous
