Not a great movie. Not a movie to end all movies. But a decent movie. I feel like in the age of Twilight movies and poorly conceived remakes that they give five stars without a second thought, people get weird and finicky at the strangest times and about the strangest things.
The Dark Tower as a movie was a total failure in box office terms. But did it really have to be? Who decided that the movie was so bad? I watched it and thought: well, it's certainly better than any Zack Snyder movie. And yet somehow is lower rated than nearly every Zack Snyder movie (hint: he did Batman v. Superman).
So my question is: what was so bad about the movie?
Idris Elba and Matthew Mcconaughey do a fantastic, bang up job. The narrative itself is solid, if not quite fleshed out. The characters do feel rushed, and this is perhaps the unforgivable sin: the pacing. As someone who read the first in the Gunslinger series of novels, I think that maybe I don't mind so much because for me the characters are already fleshed out to a large degree. But at the same time my expectations were low, because I've learned to expect very little from adaptations of books in general.
Well, I'm late and very behind, having only just seen the movie today after renting it from Redbox. Maybe it's better that I did, as I would have been very disappointed with its reception.
