Facebook, Cambridge Analytica and Data Privacy

in data-protection •  7 years ago

In this day of everything digital and social media where like, click, download or share everything nothing is private anymore.

Information privacy is the relationship between the collection and dissemination of data, technology, the public expectation of privacy, and the legal and political issues surrounding them (Michael M.G, Michael Katina, 1976).

Many data protection laws exist in different countries. Companies are required to abide by these laws but who is to say they are abiding by the laws or data protection acts?

Recently there have been news of the mis-use of data by Cambridge Analytica, a firm that uses data to change audience behaviour (according to its website). The data used was obtained from Facebook which has led to the #deletefacebook.

I am all for download and using apps but one should read the terms and conditions and check privacy settings of your social media account to prevent your data being used without your consent as it is the case with Cambridge Analytica which used the information it obtained to influence elections including that of Nigeria and Kenya and quiet possibly the United States since Donald Trump campaign hired them.
