Chronology of Death Steve Irwin
On September 4, 2006, Irwin was in a shooting location in the Batt Reef area, near Port Douglas, Queensland, in the production of a documentary film entitled "Ocean's Deadliest". During the break in the filming caused by the worsening weather, Irwin decided to snorkel in shallow waters while being filmed.
While swimming, Irwin approached the stingray with an estimated span of two meters (6.5 feet).
According to witnesses of the incident,
"Suddenly a stingray attacked and started poking Irwin's body with his tail. Hundreds of stabs in a few seconds.
Irwin initially believed he was only injured in the lung part. However, the stingrays have penetrated his heart, causing him to die of blood loss. The behavior of the stingray appears to be a self-defense response.
Irwin's death is believed to be the only death of stingrays ever captured in the video.
