Memories of friends lost

This has been a sad week. As one gets older the reality of our mortality begins to hit home.
I am not an obituary watcher, like some of my older friends but when friends you have known for years suddenly pass away it does have an impact.
This last week saw the passing of two friends of many years. Even though we were not in close contact anymore, they were never the less part of my history. They were larger than life characters, men who would always draw attention. They had presence. Lawrence was a man with loads of charisma, a man of many parts, a conjuror, stage hypnotist, special effects producer and much more besides. Even though in recent times we were separated by distance, South Africa is a large country, we would meet up occasionally and it would be like no time has passed.

Barry was also a special person, quick tempered, generous, an old resident of our town. He knew all the town history and was a fixture on the local stage. Just a few weeks ago I had a chat with our local museum curator, we made plans to interview him so that the local knowledge could be recorded somewhere. Now that source has gone. I am going to miss visiting his workshop. He was always so hospitable, quick with a joke, an altogether great character. He worked until the last. When the cancer was discovered it was only a matter of a few weeks until the end.
What have I learned? We are mortal, our friends can be taken in an instant, enjoy every day to its fullest. Maybe there is someone you have meaning to call, now is the time to make the call.
I would like to dedicate this poem by Henry Scott Holland to their memory.

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That, we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very near.
Just around the corner.

All is well.

Friends are great comfort and it is very hard to see them slip off. But, we all are only here for a short while. We I believe are just caterpillars living among each other and cannot see from the grazing area we live in that the ones that move on flutter above us as butterflies and moths. Hopefully we will all become butterflies and we will soon join them in eternal bliss. For the moths fly into the fire and lights to be consumed. I know without question that God is real and we are the ones that live in a unreal world. Jesus is real and the Bible is more predictable than the prophecies of the likes of mere humans. They seem to be coming true, and the more they do, the less humans want to believe them.
Thank you for this post!! I am glad to have run across you today! :) don't despair, I am only 62, yet I've seen plenty leave me and I have just become more and more believing that there is a God that is real.

Thankyou @gunni55 for the kind and encouraging words. I share your faith and know that they have only shed their mortal skin and are in a better place,

I know I can't replace them for you have years with them, but accept that I will be a friend to you, feel free to consider me someone to talk to. :) anytime.

Thanks so much, I have been looking through some of your earlier posts, we have much in common. It is strange how life works sometimes, I have a friend in West Virginia we have been chatting every Wednesday for many years, we are separated by oceans and continents and have never met physically but I consider him to be one of my closest friends. Thanks again for you input and kind words.

I found a video I wanted you to hear:

Well, I was listening to them and thought I would share with you. I don't have any local friends to share with, so... I wanted you to share my listening with... :D
I love to hear them too... so many people that seem to be one family...

What I really love about the Gaithers is that they all seem to enjoy themselves so much. Worship should be sharing the happiness you feel with others. IMHO.

Well, believe it or not, I have not been able to access Christian Web sites on the internet one by one, the browser says cannot connect , site took too long or my computer is blocking by the anti virus set up. Well, I know better, when you have no problem connecting to anyother site then I know it is topic directed. I am not stupid. I lost the ability to get Paul Begley's Web site about 3 months ago and now I cannot connect to Israelilivenews.com with Steven DeNoon. I get them fine on you tube, but they are saying they are constantly fighting to stay on you tube. We must get all the information we can now before it is completely gone. I have my Bible and my personal knowledge of what I have learned. I downloaded my favorite gospel music from you tube, just for my own on my own personal computer for when it is gone as well. I wanted to let you know this as well.

Thanks for the info Tim. I know that there is a orchestrated attack against Christians from many quarters. I will investigate this from my end as well. Maybe access from South Africa would work. I will let you know.

Sorry for the loss of your friends. I just dealt with the first anniversary of my father's passing a couple of days ago. Losing friends and family sure changes your priorities and you as a person. 😞

Thank you @mikeshuh it is always difficult dealing with the death of family or friends but life must go on. Thank you for taking the time to read and to comment, it is much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your friends. It is always hard to lose someone.
Hell, I get broken up when a pet dies.
Here is one of my favorite quotes:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the
intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body,
but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- WOW-- What a Ride!"

What a great view to take, I love the poem. I have written a few myself in my earlier years, a bit on the dark side but creativity flows best in some kind of crisis. Again thank you for your support.

Thank you for this post
