One Potato, Two Potato, Eight - SPUD

in dec2019spud •  5 years ago  (edited)

First off, I need to explain why I have, apparently abandoned my WordPress blog with its @steempress plugin: my audience there is very different from on @steemit and I have noticed that this type of post gets very little traffic on that site. I do, however, sometime in the future, plan a post - for them - about Steemit, Steempress and why I like blogging on this particular platform, too.

SAM_5113.JPG

Life off the blockchain has been rather busy over the last few months, some of which ironically coincided with the most recent hardfork. I have been posting much less frequently, but have tried to do so at least once a week. In addition to the reduction in frequency, my posts have been longer reads and have taken much, much more time to prepare.

I am not one for contests - I keep on saying - but have, ironically, participated in more of them on the blockchain than in my entire life.

Why?

Not because I will win a prize (that has occasionally happened) but either because the topic resonates and inspires me to write or, as in this case, makes me think a little more critically about what I am doing on Steemit and in my blogging life, in general.

I did not formally participate in SPUD 7, but I did power up on 1 November. For the rest of the month I followed @abitcoinskeptic's lead and powered up more frequently, and with today's infinitesimal amount, powered up a total of 61,877 Steem for November.

Spud8_01122019.jpg

Getting back to my musings, and when I started SPUDding, my goal was to reach 1,000 Steem which I acheived in SPUD 5. Since then, I've delegated some SP to @phctop3 which is now transformed into @yourtop3, to the newly established @steemsa and have leased some through @dlease.

But that's not all

I've noticed that the longer posts, following HF21/22, have yielded much better returns than before. What I did not do for the graphic below, was analyse the frequency of post in any detail. You will have to take my word for it (or look for yourself) that prior to the hardfork, I was posting as often as three or four times a week. During April participated in @traciyork's #steemblopomo and produced a post for nearly 40 straight days. The rewards then were nowhere near what they are now. The rewards from curation and engagement - which if done properly IMHO - also take time and thought - are negligible. Consequently my curation is now restricted to engagement on posts about topics on which I have something to say. That is often a lot. Sometimes I have nothing to say and the post gets a vote (of a value I determine). Of course, like everyone in a social network, I follow and engage with my blogpals - just for fun.
Oh, and one other thing: I did sign up for a couple of curation trails and two things happened: I discovered I was upvoting not just the account I wanted to upvote and a couple of gazillion accounts posts I wouldn't have upvoted, and I was upvoting myself, none of which rested well with me. My curation is manual. Very manual.

So, without further ado, here is a chart of what I have powered up on my account over the last five months:

Spud8.jpg

As I've already said, for this month, I've powered up just under 62 Steem. Had I not formally participated in this month's Top 3 contest, I'd have powered up another 20. This liquid Steem went to paying the entry fee and into the prize pool and therefore also stays in the big Steem(y) pond.

A final thought or two...

I admit to being quite happy with the growth in my account given that other than the income from the small amount leased, 90% of the growth is what I refer to as sweat equity - posts I've taken time to craft and which people read and upvote. I am grateful to each and every account that does, and to those who stop by and leave thoughtful comments. These are all reasons for hanging around on Steemit. And the belief that crypto currencies and Steem, in particular, is a good investment. My time, at the moment, is the only currency I have to invest. All the fiat I earn goes into paying the bills and as you see in the photograph, finding water so that we can make our garden work (and feed us) again.

Until next time

Hey @fionasfavourites, here is a little bit of BEER from @detlev for you. Enjoy it!

Join Steem Power Up Day at the 1. of December and power up BEER

    Cheers to you too, @beerlover!

Awesome, I'm glad my suggested spud tag is being used by some people.
62 is a good month. I decided to buy some Steem at the last minute because the price was retracting a little over the weekend.

I can see why some of your wordpress followers aren't too interested in Steem. I've been good with pushing my posts on Twitter and Facebook (just for the 2 extra links), but I am not too keen on posting my monthly Steem review as it is only helpful for people who use Steem.

Ah, thank you. I am not unhappy with my "progress". With the festive season and our summer getting into swing, I am getting busier. In January, I will be starting a TEFL course, so am going to have to be really savvy with my time management. I don't want to stop blogging for two reasons: I like the process and I will lose traction that I will have to recoup. Interesting times.

Thanks for your support and encouragement @abitcoinskeptic

I am now curious about your tefl course. I took a 120 tesol course through a graduate program a few years ago, it was intense. I was considering persuing an M.Ed in SLA but decided to change course and career (drastically it turned out). Inreally enjoyed it though and learned more about TEFL in those 3 months of hellish Saturdays than I did in 9 years of teaching esl and teacher training (not to say inclass experience doesn't help more with practical things).

Well, once I know, I shall share. I bought a voucher a while ago, and which is valid until 31 December. Once activated, I have six months' access to the platform. The course is through https://www.teflfullcircle.com/.

I hope you have coffee or a beer...

I am hoping that because I have an English degree, and not only trained as a teacher, but have developed train the trainer courses as well as having been an online writing tutor and developed materials for online writing tutoring, this shouldn't be too difficult. For years I worked in what was known as the ESL space writing materials and training and then became passionate about adult learning and TVET, so in a sense, it could be a coming full circle.

I'm not entirely enamoured with the "stuff" that goes with teaching and much prefer where I ended up - on the policy and syndicated research side, but those days are over. Another long story.

What I am hoping with this, is to secure work that enables me to work online and in my timezone. My husband, for a myriad of reasons can't travel and, frankly, I do rather enjoy being an opinionated home body, but I do need to look at ways of generating an income that could go on for a while. Online TEFL seems like an option.

Returning to the voucher: what I have paid for the course makes it a no-brainer and if my having asked around about online opportunities, I need just one client to recoup that investment and the rest, well, you catch my drift. I have, though, not redeemed the voucher because the timing wasn't right and I knew that I needed to clear the decks to be able to devote time and energy to it.

Borehole drilling and dam-building and associated distractions (about which I shall be writing) followed by the festive season which is very busy for me, meant that I had to be sensible and put it off. So, I shall activate it on 30 December and schedule stuff around it.

I may well write about my experience/what I think about it (as I do), when things unfold.

    Asked and answered, I hope?

Oh, and I get the change in direction - and hope it worked out for you. In my case, I was offered an opportunity to do a Ph D. Turned it down in favour of moving to the village. As it turns out, drastic though that was, I think it was the right thing to do. Sometimes pursuing an academic path isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Wow, great reply. After I stopped teaching, after a year, I really missed it. I picked up a few students to tutor. Not only was the extra money great, but I hated my job at the time and didn't find it challenging. There was no room for self-improvement at that dead end job (it was a stepping stone). Tutoring is always challenging. I had no regrets. Now I'm at a better job where I am challenged and can develop a lot. I'm also a little too busy. I would do it again part time, or maybe when I want to move on again.

I took TESOL after about 7 years of teaching. I didn't have a background in education, but I had a lot of experience and training. It made the practical elements easier and a lot of the basic theory. Also, I aced the grammar parts. However, SLA and some of the other more theoretical stuff was a little new to me. The research projects were easier than what I did in undergrad. I ended up really liking it.

I guess with your background you will have no problems in the class.

My life has always been about changes, especially since I moved away from Canada. I'm not sure when my next career change will be, but it will come one day. I'd never be satisfied doing the same thing all my life. I like learning new things and job is huge part of my time.

I don't move around and jump around too often (I've stayed near Seoul for over 10 years), but I do think about a quieter life in the country. I think my next move will be to a town. I'm not sure if I can handle a village or rural area after living in a megacity for so many years. I live at the outskirts of a satellite city, which is ideal right now

My life has always been about changes, especially since I moved away from Canada

Hahaha! If this is like me, it's because you get bored. That's why 25-odd years of consulting freelancing suited me (not my bank balance)!

I used to write more on my post but slowly I've become more tired and a bit low of choice of words.
Not sure if it's a change but I try to engage more too..
After a while, it kinds of burns me out.

@ireenchew - I completely get you. I've gone back to the blogging strategy I used when I started blogging - about five years ago. For me, it's not so much about Steem as it is about an outlet for me, and my writing, cooking, thinking, whatever....

    I appreciate your stopping by.

    Happy Sunday

    Thank you so much!

@fionasfavourites It is the thought that counts no matter the size of the power up. #spud and myself are truly grateful for your support and participation. Keep doing your thing, and as for the water situation, hope you can resolve it quickly. Take care and have a great day!

As I said, I like this and that it forces me to do a little analysis and reflection, so participating - when I can - is a no brainer.

The water thing - thank you - has been very exciting and we're settling into a rhythm and the garden is growing. Some of the "gory" details will emerge in a series of posts that I am planning. We shall how time permits over the next while...and specifically between now and #spud9!

Ok sounds good. Please do keep us up to date on the well digging experience.

Attracting people from various platforms does not always appeal to all, never found one place that keeps everyone happy.

At the end of the day longer, informative posts are definitely more effective, writing a post every day I found was not allowing me sufficient time to attend to other interests, reading or supporting other members, all time consuming.

Heck I missed Spud this month, will have to join the the next.

    !tip

Thanks for the tip, Joan. It's all a learning curve. I was also finding the mandatory daily curation very taxing with all the stuff that's been going on. I am not surprised you missed SPUD and looking at where December is heading for us, I'll probably miss the next one.

🎁 Hi @fionasfavourites! You have received 0.1 STEEM tip from @joanstewart!

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide.

Happy spud day! The first of the month always has me craving potatoes now, haha! That's a pretty solid number to power up for not having the time to post much. And of course, the @yourtop3 crew thanks you very much for the delegation support and rambly amazing contest posts when the mood strikes. ;)
