At the May 16th Tompkins County Legislature meeting, the topic of the defacing of public monuments came up. Legislator Veronica Pillar admitted to knowing someone who had defaced public murals in the city of Ithaca with messages such as "Black Lives Matter" and "We are on stolen land". Pillar defended the messaging within the graffiti as "important".
Making graffiti on property without the owner’s permission to do so is a class “A” misdemeanor in New York State, punishable by up to one year in jail. Veronica Pillar has admitted to knowledge of a misdemeanor crime.
