Going Green With Eco-Friendly Dental Supplies

There’s increasing awareness of the need for environmental responsibility in the dental practice. Public Health England’s 2014 report on the carbon footprint of the dental industry (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carbon-modelling-within-dentistry-towards-a-sustainable-future) highlighted many ways that practices can improve their green credentials. Here are just a few ideas that could help to transform your practice:

Reduce – Moving from paper to digital patient files and documentation, and “going paperless” where possible. Using digital radiography can reduce patient radiation exposure as well as helping the environment: there’s no longer the need to use toxic developing chemicals or lead foils. If incorrectly disposed of, amalgam has the potential to end up in the water system where it can release mercury. It can also release mercury into wastewater during restorative procedures. If you’ve stopped using amalgam in your practice, then you’re one step closer to being green. Install a water meter, and use motion sensitive taps in bathrooms to minimize water use. Install energy and water efficient appliances where possible. Use energy-efficient lighting within the practice. Eliminate aerosol products where possible. The latest solar electric and heating panels are very efficient and can provide long term savings. Pay bills online rather than demanding paper invoices and receipts. Digital versions of journals are often available. Look for office furniture made of recycled materials, and paint that doesn’t contain harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Reuse – Using air dryers rather than paper towels in bathrooms. Encourage staff to use reusable cups, plates, and towels, or if that’s not possible, buy products made from recyclable and biodegradable materials. Provide a water filter so your team can drink filtered water in reusable cups rather than using plastic bottles. Buy high-quality equipment that can be updated and will not quickly become obsolete.

Recycle – Recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, batteries, aluminum, mobile phones, and computers where possible and in line with your infection control and confidentiality procedures. Recycling shredded paper will contribute to sustainability. Recycling containers can be kept in inaccessible areas to encourage both patients and staff to recycle.

Rethink – Influence your staff to think green, and encourage them to avoid using the car to commute to work if possible. Carpooling would be a way to reduce carbon emissions if the car is essential. This thinking could even be extended to holidays – could you travel abroad by train rather than a plane? Stock recycled and eco-friendly products within your counter-top product range. Select products with minimal packaging, or recyclable packaging. Share your innovations with patients where appropriate. Green practices often lead to financial savings for your business. Look for eco-friendly uniform (https://www.mydentaluniform.co.uk/) made with organic cotton. Chlorine-free, high post-consumer recycled paper products are much lower impact than traditional paper products. Signs in practice bathroom can encourage water conservation and help to spread your eco-friendly message. Appointment reminders can be sent by email or text message rather than by post.
If you’re looking to source eco-friendly dental supplies (https://www.kentexpress.co.uk) in the UK, Kent Express has introduced a number of products that can help your practice and patients to be more eco-friendly.
