Suicide Prevention | Pay attention to your loved ones

Some people treat the people who they are only connected with by technology better than the people they see every day in real life. I think this is a defense mechanism for people who are afraid of being hurt by people who see them for who they really are. If you are in a room with other people who you claim to love, and are smiling into a screen (phone, television or otherwise) at someone far away who is not connected to the loved one close by, ask yourself if this is you. Especially, if the person in the room is your child.

Every day someone in the world commits suicide, and a loved one didn't see it coming, because they hadn't been paying attention to signs of bullying, abuse, depression, anxiety, mental illness, etc. Probably, just as often, people purposefully, look the other way from someone who they KNOW is in pain, because they don't want to "get involved" and are quietly hoping that it works itself out. A lot of times it doesn't and more suicides happen. In 2018, I'm speaking out against bullies and giving victims permission and a safe space when they are with me.

Thank you for touching on this topic. A lot of times, especially depending on your cultural background, families treat illness that they can't see--depression, anxiety, etc. as if are not illnesses that need to be treated with attentiveness, love and care. I also feel like the more technology becomes a part of our every day lives, the more disconnected we become from one another. The perfect breeding ground for depression and silent suffering.

Depression is not a joke and it should be given attention especially your family.
