Designing my next watch! Inspiration and thought process

in design •  6 years ago

Hi everyone,

I haven't been posting in a while, (insert excuse). Today I thought it would be fun to take everyone along of me completing my next watch. I will be posting new blogs along the way if there is any progress. Documenting this whole experience will hopefully be motivating you guys to start your own project in whatever field and also nice for me to look back on once everything is done.

Things I will be covering:

  • Design process (inspiration, thought process etc.)
  • Marketing strategy upon completion

A brief introduction of a watch I designed previously can be found here:
https://steemit.com/watches/@watchesdaily/4-i-made-this-my-very-own-wristwatch-proud-of-myself-lancia-delta-integrale-evo

and a failed kickstarter project can be found here:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2026693534/limited-edtion-affordable-automatic-watch-for-ever?ref=backerkit

I have learned a lot from both projects, third time's a charm, so let's go for it.

What do I want in a watch?

A luxury watch on the surface is the most useless thing you could buy. Showing of wealth is commonly associated with wearing an expensive timepiece. When reaching 'Watch nerd' status and you get into the different techniques that are used while making a watch, it all starts to make a little bit more sense. It is all about craftsmanship.

I want to make a watch which is using techniques that are used in very high quality timepieces, but for a more wallet friendly price. This can not be done on the same level as the high-end watchmakers, and I will never claim that, because that will hurt my own watch nerd soul.

Which techniques will I be using for this watch?

I will use blue flamed hands, which is a process shown in the video below

and I will be using oven heated enamel dials;

both techniques have a big part in classical watchmaking history.

Will I be disruption the billion dollar watch industry?

https://www.google.nl/search?q=disrupting+the+industry+watch&oq=disrupting+the+industry+watch&aqs=chrome..69i57j0.5224j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I guess that has been done before, maybe I'll go disrupt the disruptors? Or maybe I'll just do my ''thing'' and hope people will enjoy my true love for watchmaking instead of hyped marketing pieces.

Next blog I will show you a walkthrough of the design process, where I started, and where it is now.

Kind regards,
Ron
