The bible teaches us that God examines the hearts and thoughts of men, and that no one escapes his judgment: "I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.", Jeremiah 17:10.
This explanation is of great importance because it teaches us how the most important spiritual gifts work in the human heart: "Now eagerly desire the greater gifts", 1 Corinthians 12:31.
When God gives us a spiritual gift, that gift transforms us internally, sometimes in a spectacular way as in the case of Solomon, but others in a more common and simple way, through the mercy of every day with our neighbor.
David in the last days of his reign leaves an important teaching to his son Solomon, very similar to the proverb of the prophet, that later will be the basis of his greatness: "And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.", 1 Chronicles 28:9.
Even if the King Solomon was a king remembered for his wealth, his power, and the splendor of his reign, the most important thing he received were the spiritual gifts of wisdom, discernment and understanding, from God at the beginning of his reign in a sacred place:
"On that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, ´Ask! What shall I give you?´
And Solomon said to God: ´You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in this place. Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?´
Then God said to Solomon: ´Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king—wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.´", 2 Chronicles 1:7-12.
