Ein Camping Messer mit großem Namen / A outdoor knife with a big name (de/en)

Im heutigen Post sind wir anscheinend meilenweit von meinem vorherigen, über das Nepalesische Kukri, entfernt.
Aber - wie gesagt, nur anscheinend. Denn schon die Bezeichnung Feldmesser deutet es an. Hiermit werden keine Felder gemessen, sondern es ist für den Einsatz im Felde - also für die Armee - konstruiert.
Um welche Armee es sich dabei handelt, hört man schon am Name der Herstellerfirma: die Östereichische Firma Glock. Richtig, die mit den berühmten Pistolen, ohne die kein Ami TV Krimi mehr möglich ist.

But - as I said, only apparently. Because also this knife is made for the use in a army environment.
You can tell from the name of the manufacturer which army it is: the Austrian company Glock. Right, the one with the famous pistols, without which no American TV thriller is possible today.

Obwohl es auf den ersten Blick viel Ähnlichkeit mit einem Bayonett hat, ist es keins. Es gibt keine Befestigungsmöglichkeit, auch ist das am Steyr AUG nicht vorgesehen, dem Sturmgewehr des Östereichischen Bundesheers. Stattdessen hat sich Glock überlegt, was wirklich wichtig ist im Feld. Deshalb wurde ein Flaschenöffner integriert: das nach vorn gknickte Stück der Parierstange.
Insgesamt ist das FM78 als univeral Messer ausgelegt. Trotz des geringen Gewichts (246g mit Scheide) ist es extrem stabil, relativ groß und superscharf (sofern man es richtig schleift). Erstaunlicherweise war es überhaupt nicht geschliffen als ich es gekauft habe, nur geschmiedet und schwarz lackiert. Man sollte sich also vor dem Kauf erkundigen wie es ausgeliefert wird - und sich ggf. auf eine ausgiebige Schleifarbeit gefaßt machen. Aber man lernt auch was dabei. :)
Sowohl der Griff wie auch die Scheide sind aus dem bewährten Polymer gefertigt, das auch für die Rahmen der Glock Pistolen verwendet wird. Die Klinge besteht aus langsam rostenden (aber nicht rostfreiem) Kohlenstoffstahl mit Härte HRC55.

At first glance it looks a lot like a Bayonet, but it isn't. There is no mounting option, as there is no Bayonet lug on the Steyr AUG, the assault rifle of the Austrian Armed Forces. Instead, Glock concentrated on what is really important in the field, and integrated a bottle opener. Its that piece of the cross bar bend forward.
Over all, the FM78 is designed as a universal knife. Despite its low weight (246g incl. scabbard), it is extremely solid, relatively large and super sharp (after you sharpen it properly). To my surprise the knife was delivered completly without sharpening. I recommend to ask the dealer about the sharpening state on delivery. And perhaps expect a extensive sharpening work. But its a good practice, too. :)
Both the handle and the scabbard are made of the proven polymer that is also used for the frames of Glock pistols. The blade is made of slow rusting (but not stainless) carbon steel with a hardness of HRC55.

Wie man auf dem Foto sieht, ist die Scheide komplett aus einem Guß, mit Gürtelschlaufe, Messersicherung und Öse für ein Schenkelband. Unten ist sie offen um Wasser ablaufen zu lassen. Man hat sich also auch hier sehr genau überlegt wie man das am besten baut. Die Sicherung ist anfangs extrem stramm, da mußte ich mit der Feile etwas nacharbeiten. Das sorgt aber dafür, das das Messer in der Scheide nicht klappert.

As you can see in the photo, the sheath is completely made of one piece, with belt loop, knife lock and eyelet for a thigh band. It is open at the bottom to allow water to run off. So here, too, they have thought very carefully about the best design. The lock is extremely tight at the beginning, so I had to adjust it a bit with a file. But this is to ensure that the knife does not rattle in the sheath.

Das Messer ist in Olive, Schwarz und Sandfarben erhältlich, sowohl mit Sägerücken oder mit glattem Rücken.
Der Preis liegt je nach Version und Anbieter zwischen €35 und €40. Das finde ich für die Qualität durchaus akzeptabel. Als Allzweckmesser für Camping, Tauchen usw. sollte man sowieso lieber nicht so teuere Messer benutzen - dann ärgert man sich weniger, wenns doch mal kaputt geht oder verloren wird. Das Glock FM78 kann man jederzeit erneut beschaffen, bei vielen Edelmessern ist das nicht so einfach, vom Preis mal abgesehen.

The knife is available in olive, black and sand colors, both with a saw back or with a smooth back.
Depending on the version and vendor, the price is between € 35 and € 40. I find that quite acceptable for the quality. As an all-purpose knife for camping, diving etc. you shouldn't use expensive knives anyway - then you won't be annoyed if it breaks or gets lost. The Glock FM78 can be purchased again at any time, with many fine knives that is not so easy, apart from the price.
