Lieber Werner, "Abend" schreibt man immer groß, weil es ein Nomen ist, "heute" klein, weil es ein Adjektiv ist und dieses Nomen näher beschreibt, selbiges gilt für alle Tageszeiten, die einzige Ausnahme ist "morgen früh"! (:

"heute" ist ein temporales Adverb. "heutig" wäre ein daraus abgeleitetes Adjektiv.
