Three Fruits Great For Fighting Diabetes By David Andrews

Do you often omit fruit from your meal because you worry that it’s simply too high in sugar to have if you are trying not to prevent or manage diabetes? Many people do. And it’s true – certain varieties of fruit do tend to be very high in sugar content and can do a number on your blood glucose level if you aren’t careful.

But, this doesn’t mean that you should avoid fruit entirely. In fact, fruit should be part of any diabetics diet plan because it is so high in nutrients and also contains a good dose of dietary fiber.

Fiber will help to slow the release of sugar into the blood stream, therefore preventing the spike that you are aiming to avoid.

Also keep in mind that half the sugar found in fruit is the fructose variety and fructose doesn’t increase blood sugar levels like glucose does. Instead, fructose moves to the liver for processing, bypassing the blood entirely.

All of this said, some fruits are healthier than others, in terms of managing diabetes.
Certain fruits contain less sugar content overall, meaning they will not pose quite the threat to your blood sugar in the first place.

So which fruits earn top marks?

First, check out berries.

Whether you choose blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries, berries in general contain less sugar than most other fruits. If you really want the one with the lowest sugar content, go for raspberries. Per one cup of raspberries, you’ll take in just 64 calories and 5.4 grams of sugar. On top of that, you get 8 grams of fiber, which means this berry is awesome for keeping your blood glucose levels in check. With the load of antioxidants it also boats, you simply can’t go wrong with this choice.

Grapefruits are also a good option if you want to keep your blood sugar levels in check.

They do contain more sugar than raspberries do at 14 grams per small grapefruit, but studies suggest that eating half a grapefruit prior to your meals may actually help to improve insulin resistance, thus it could help you better manage diabetes. Rather than opting for an orange for breakfast, try the grapefruit instead.

Finally, the last fruit that everyone overlooks as an option is the avocado.

This fruit is actually rich in healthy fats, while being quite high in fiber and very low in sugar. This makes it a perfect choice for blood glucose control. A quarter avocado contains 80 calories, 7.4 grams of fat, and a mere 0.3 grams of sugar. Along with this, it also provides 3.4 grams of dietary fiber, so as you can see, it will have almost no impact on blood glucose levels at all.

Avocado’s are also a rich source of vitamin E, so it will go a long way towards keeping your skin and hair healthy while defending it against oxidative damage.

So there you have three types of fruits you definitely do not need to shun as you go about your healthy eating diet plan. Get these in the picture and you can feel good about including them in your plan.

Need a little help getting started? Check out the smoothie below, which includes two of the three fruits listed above.
