As I have relatives with diabetes I am always interested in natural approaches to dealing with the condition. When I saw coconut palm sugar has a role to play I was pleasantly surprised.
There is an ample supply of coconut palm sugar in Asia and I love coconuts!
Diabetes & Coconuts
People who suffer from diabetes cannot manage their insulin production effectively which has effects on how sugar is used by the cells of the body. Traditional views of diabetes was once you get it you have to remain on insulin all your life but I do not subscribe to that view.
The film Simply Raw Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days began me on a path of research and my views are different from many doctors. I believe most things can be handled by diet and exercise. The father of Western medicine Hippocrates said:
And he was correct! Understanding how our body uses food is the key to healing. There is much more money in prescribing insulin injections that must be taken several times a day.
In my own experiences watching the treatment of diabetics I know I feel they are given too many pharmaceuticals but that is just my opinion. It is profitable though!
Coconuts For Diabetics! π΄
Coconut palm sugar comes from the sap of the coconut tree which is heated to evaporate the water and leave the sugar. The sugar is brown, has a pleasant taste and comes either as small crumbs or in round hard blocks which have been set in a small coconut as you can see in the image above. It is similar to brown sugar which is made with molasses but is a natural product which has not been highly processed.
This brown gold is considered a healthier option for diabetics because it contains less pure fructose than other kinds of sugar. Pure fructose is absorbed differently from other sugars and an excess of fructose ends up in the liver which can cause health problems such as type 2 diabetes.
Coconut palm sugar has a lower glycemic index (GI) value than other foods, around the same or less than honey or cane sugar. Low GI foods are suggested to diabetics because they do not raise blood sugar levels.
As I believe diet is of the utmost importance for diabetics understanding the various options for food and sweeteners is vital. Even for those of us who do not suffer from diabetes coconut palm sugar is very pleasant in its texture and flavor.
If you have never tried some I suggest that you give it a go - it's lovely! π

We have plenty of coconut trees but it is my first time to hear of coconut palm sugar. I know of some Filipinos who only drink the fresh sap :)
I loved to eat "minatamis na bao" like the second photo since I was a kid but I didn't know it comes from the sap hahaha my goodness.
