Some of our followers might be like, hey ... you were supposed to post Day Two yesterday and today is actually the third day of your Sintra Trip. Well, life is full of surprises and can throw your diaper in a bunch. That what kind of happend to us yesterday.
So yesterday we had a fun day of exploring Palácio Nacional de Sintra, had a wonderful cheap lunch and we could clock a good amount of hours in for our "day" jobs at the local library. We walked back towards the historic center where our car was parked. Halfway there I took some long exposures of this beautiful Arabic fountain ... when all of a sudden a firetruck zipped by ... damn you firetruck!
We then continued to our parked car and when I saw it I was saying, look ... our car is the last one parked there, all the other tourists are already gone. Hopped into the car and we drove up to our quinta. We drove through the gate and our hearts stopped for a moment. That's where the firetrucks headed.
Originally we were supposed to have our room in that building but the owner was so kind to put us in an apartment in a house next door. These flames were a horrible sight, the quinta just had been fully renovated 1 1/2 years ago and we didn't even got to see the inside of it. But we know it was beautiful inside and out. We tried to help as much as we could but for the most part we just stood there with disbelieve.
It got late, so we decided to retreat and get our things out of the car .... we had a backpack in the trunk while the car was parked which contained my camera and stabilizer. We popped the trunk and it was gone!!! GONE! We couldn't believe it. There was no sign of a break in (the next day we noticed that the lock entrance was bent tiny bit) we were even more shocked. I used the camera to film footage like this:
This morning we went to the police to report it, the moment we told him where we parked the car (don't have your car parked on Rua Marechal Saldanha after sunseet) , he knew exactly what was going on. We also noticed the next day that there were 3 spots where they actually smashed the glass to get inside other cars, in general a bad sign. That makes me wonder, if that's a common thing - why not have police patrol once in a while? Ugh!
The equipment was expensive but the worst is that I lost tons of footage from our previous trip to Setubal and Sesimbra, it breaks my heart. But then again putting it into perspective, we just saw someone who saw her life dream going up into flames.
Thank god you were not inside the building! The loss of the camera and all the footage breaks my heart. But at least you are safe :)

Yes!!! Ugh ... it seems already so long ago but we're still here and every time we drive by that villa my heart drops. Good news .. the footage from Setubal and Sesimbra was backed up ... now only the Sintra footage is missing.

I am terribly sorry to read this report. Even shocked, of course.
All I can say, hoewver, is the same what I said to one of my sons when he came home after a rock festival in Salzburg, completely robbed (thieves in that case), "...but you are back home healthy and alive! All the rest is not worth feeling sad or angry!"
Please celebrate. Celebrate life (jetzt erst recht!!!). We cannot keep all our stuff, we cannot save everything.
It may be a very bad loss for you now, but it's just an experience and the best lecture is how to gain balance under such circumstances.
If you open your hearts and minds for new good things coming into your lives they certainly will and bring you even better material and a better equipment.

:-( OH MY! That's really NOT what you want to deal with on your travels... Damn it. I wil not babble about security and such, since this really is mostly about 1) people not having boundaries and 2) you lost your footage. I really feel this and have lost some of my footage in the past too - it really hurts. (I still think about this sometimes. Lost but never forgotten.)

Nope, that's what you don't want to deal with but being on the road you have to deal with all kinds of different things and it makes you learn to deal with other things in the future. Luckily the pictures are still around.

I'm sorry about what happened :( I understand how you feel because those are memories from your trip. But those memories will always be with you in your mind and heart, and it's good that you still have photos. I just hate that the police are aware of that happening there and they don't guard it at all. The good thing is that both of you were not hurt. I know more blessings will come your way more than what was lost. Take care always.

It's infuriating! We've been actually talking to the tourist agency here and I'm also going to send a complaint directly to the major. Instead preventing and warning, they pretend this issue doesn't exist. No local would ever park there in the evening. This afternoon we're going to yet another spot which is very well known for car break ins: Cabo da Roca - When we were in Curacao they had similar issues but there local warn you, there were signs! I wish you luck in your complaints. It's really frustrating. We have places here where the police aren't doing their jobs too and complaints to the government takes forever. Hopefully the process there is better.

Indeed and stupidly sometimes we have so much more in the car's trunk. It's just how it is if you're on the road. They could have stolen so much more.
