Perhaps they know something we don't about what those pics might capture? Me thinks so.

certainly...after decades of not enforcing the rule.
suddenly it's IMPORTANT that you pay a fee.

Classic. I remember when i got my 1st telescope, it came w/software for my computer to track which regions of the sky I had been studying. But for some reason my (Windows) OS, at the time, wouldn't let me install it. Saying it was malicious! We're talking about the install disk that came w/my telescope my mom bought me! I think it's so I can't tell everyone when the comet will get here ;).

Anything that will encourage the Flat Earthers.

yeah i see

Amazing

Freedom? Never heard of it!

I think the right word is "Feedom" or "Permitdom" ... ;-)

You know they stepped in because they don't want a private company filming freely in Earths orbit. The reason of course is that we would see a whole bunch of things they don't want us to see. Why do you think the feed on the ISS always stops suddenly?

Gessh you need a license for everything!!!

The government probably wants to know what they intend to take pictures of so that national secrets, or lies are not revealed.

It's just a matter of time that we will need a license to blog on Steemit. @ironshield

Clearly, it follows that the government feels threatened in their national security or simply want to protect themselves from intruders that can take away a good part of their business. It's fair? I think it is not, because the fact of making such an extremely high investment to reach the space, the least that you should allow is to take some photos of interest ... They want to limit the number of actors who are visualizing the earth from space... Of course there is a limitation on the free access to knowledge.

play stupid games wins stupid prizes, boo hoo for Elon the welfare queen, he takes the governments money he can follow their rules. There is a pretty clear national security interest in controlling satellite and high altitude imagery, the reason we invented satellite imagery and high altitude imagery was for military purposes. Seems like some poor planning on his part not to get the necessary permits for what he wanted to do until the last minute.
