Optimist people (i am not one) don't see the problem, see opportunities, there has been a lot of recent talk about how fragile the site seems to be to the DDOS attacks we have been suffering lately.

This has shown to some of us in the witness channel the weak link of the block chain, the simgle point of failure, now there are already alternatives to surf the STEEM block chain, the is www.busy.org ( @fabien and @ekitcho) to name one, there is @nexion 's guide to run a clone with condenser.
(I'm sure there are afew more i have not discovered yet)
If we see it as a problem...
We have not understood. It is a call for action to the community to find and create solutions.
Nexion did, there are a lot of french posts already explaining how to run a local copy of condenser.
Single Point of Failure | Elise Sullivan
The nature of steemit blockchain empowers users, witnesses and everyone to share and work together towards evolution of the platform, if the network is stronger, the human links are stronger, the goals become within reach...
The main issue i see with having steemit.com clones sprouting everywhere is Security we know users for the most part have not yet grasped the proper use of the different keys to acces and sign transactions (Hell osme are still not clear to me)
But why do we bring our keep our money in STEEM ? Isn't it because of TRUST ?
So maybe we need to sit down as a collective and brainstorm what would be the best approach to achieve proper sustainable decentralization, not start a competition to see who manages the best PR campaign to drive users to their new steem user interface / clone, but instead work together to propose a decentralized model of access.
I'm sure that with the growth in user base, steem inc has seen their server needs grow exponentially, all the same we who make scripts have seen the slowing down of the RPC nodes.
If we all join efforts, share ideas and distribute the load we might find a solution that will make the experience better for everyone and brings global benefit and profit
The other day speaking with @inquiringtimes we wondered about the witness server distribution.
As and afterthought how many RPC nodes do we have ?
How many 32GB Witness nodes do we have?
What we need the most?
RPCs or another Witness with 12Gb of ram buried down the 200 position (or in the 50)?
RPC node ready servers cost about 4 times the cost of a decent 32Gb, but maybe it is time for some witness to ditch the cost of running a small node on their own and aggregate forces to pay for renting a proper server and we start running more of them.
But then again... TRUST is an issue...
Tell you what, I'm ready to ditch my 32Gb server which is slowly climbing the ladder and trust whoever wants to associate to run a full RPC with having the brain key and managing it.

steemstage.com looks like a replica of steemit.com and is a site I used recently after struggling with busy.org, which takes a bit of getting used to (although it does have some of its own cool features).

You can run a local clone of steemit.com it is called condenser and it is found on git hub.
https://github.com/steemit/condenser
Anyone with little knowledge of web servers can provide a clone of steemit, the problem is that since is free available code it can also be modified for malicious intent.
That is were TRUST enters the equation, if a known and respected witnesses make a collective effort to provide backup infrastructure for the user side of the block chian we remove the single point of failure and the community benefits from it.
The spirit of steemit is to make money by sharing and that can apply to all levels and activities, no only to blogging and curation.
This is a whole ecosystem and a mini-society, see for example @sircork's iniciative https://steemit.com/youarehope/@youarehope/youarehope-is-recognizing-world-food-day-with-an-earnest-call-for-your-help-to-aid-our-fellow-humans-in-need-in-africa-the-philippines-and-venezuela
He is taking the block chain out to reality, you make effort with your limited means to provide user engagement and retention...
We can wait until someone with the money and the resources provides a solution for our problems or we can proactively join efforts to solve them ourselves.
that i think is the biggest lesson this block chain can teach us and those who understand that are in the path to become better humans.
PS: When you log in a steemit clone, use the private posting key (actually do it even in steemit.com) avoid using your active key in clones.
If steemit.com is down use busy (they have built trust) and avoid wallet operations during the site blackouts if possible.

Thank-you for that very informative reply. I was about to use steemstage.com to access my wallet and buy Steem from the internal exchange, but then decided I didn't know anything about that site, so did not continue the process and instead went back to steemit.com and struggled until it finally completed my transaction. One can never be too careful when it comes to money.

For me, being a "witness" was never a one man enterprise.
You bring some valid points.
To strengthen the steem infrastructure one must bring at least several witness nodes, some seeds, bringing up stable (ideally load balanced) RPC nodes sounds like a high priority project.
Pooling resources (human, financial, technical) makes most sense.
Count me in.
