What are some of the most critical health concerns we face in the 21st century, and why?

The 21st century has major health concerns born out from changing lifestyles, environmental challenges, globalization and technological advancements. First of all, “the non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory conditions, are responsible for the majority of global deaths” (Syed, S. 2023, p.1). These diseases are related to sedentarism, poor diet and inadequate psychobiological habits as excessive tobacco and alcohol consumption.
Also, mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety have been growing in number on this century due to stress, isolation, frustration and the impact of technology in the commercial field, which has caused massive dismissals. Unemployment, low self-esteem, burnout and chronic stress are main reasons to develop mental disorders-although they have genetic susceptibility-and these should be addressed with the same thoroughness as any other illness.
On the other hand, antimicrobial resistance is another worrying matter, the misuse and overuse of antibiotics over time have led to a situation where the treatment effectiveness is reduced and therapeutical complications are swiftly increasing; the staphylococcus aureus methicillin-resistant (SAMR) is an example!
In general terms, the non-communicable diseases (NCDs), mental health disorders and antimicrobial resistance are the most urgent health matters to address in this 21st century, some of the recommended measures to alleviate this situation and prevent a troublesome spike in morbidity-related charts are: informative lectures about healthy habits, screening programs, prevention and health promotion programs, the enforcement of a law to sell all antibiotics exclusively by medical prescription at pharmacies and the physician’s commitment to administer antibiotics at an intra-hospitalary setting only if necessary, having ruled out the possibility to be dealing with a viral, parasitic or mycotic infection.
