To give some nuance, I did actually kinda-sorta like the remake of Cinderella. I'm a Kenneth Branagh fan. Lily James is definitely easy on the eyes, especially when being photographed on 35mm anamorphic. Also, the original animated movie was pretty bad. Half of it was pretty much an extended Tom and Jerry episode. Branagh's Cinderella was actually an improvement.
That was eight years ago, and Disney hasn't had another creative success.
Here's the thing with the live-action remakes.
Why?
With Cinderella, the remake made sense because there was a good movie there that the original filmmakers squandered.
The other classics are classics because the original filmmakers succeeded.
Animation is an art in and of itself. There's nothing to be gained by live-action remakes in general, and everything to lose.
If somebody announced a live-action remake of Spirited Away or Grave of the Fireflies, I would hope that we would execute anybody involved in the proposal.
We never needed, and smart people never wanted, the remakes of Mulan and The Lion King. They were good as they were.
