Now if you're looking to get your kids into needlework, you cant go far wrong with crossstitch. Making a sampler for the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977 is something I had to do at school. My mum still has it in a draw somewhere and I do remember finding it rather theraputic and relaxing. I certainly got a sense of pride when I finished it.
Get the kids off the phones and tablets and get something tactile into their hands!
This is a great site for free patterns and advice, so go take a look :-)

Very nice! I used to do a lot of cross stitch with my mom when I was younger. I also did a lot of stuff with plastic canvas as well. I was quite the crafty little kid I guess. It is important to pass along these skills to the younger generation before they are gone forever.

In my house we still take out patterns and cut clothes to measure for the whole family. Can it also be a relaxing activity?

I've never really got on with cross-stitch - the threads get muddled at the back, I put the needle through the wrong hole, my hands get too hot and sticky and I end up right grumpy. I've always admired my sister who, without any apparent effort (and definitely no swearing), makes beautiful heirloom gifts commemorating weddings, birthdays and anniversaries.
