It’s a funny name for a seriously healthy blue green algae. Each morning I dump a scoop of this green powder into my morning smoothie. While we've known about Spirulina for decades, we're just now realizing its wide range of health benefits.
Spirulina is a free floating blue green algae that can be found in tropical and subtropical lakes and ponds. It was first used by the Aztecs and Mesoamericans in the 16th century and reemerged in the 1960’s when French researchers discovered the healthy spirals of algae once again. Spirulina was first cultivated for large scale production in the 1970’s.
Early researchers were interested in Spirulina because of its protein, vitamins, essential amino acids, minerals, and essential fatty acids. Spirulina is 60-70 percent protein by weight and contains a rich source vitamin B12, vitamin A, and iron. It's also particularly useful for those with poor digestion and assimilation, poor vitality and anemia, those who are overweight or obese, and those with active, high energy life styles.
Cooking with Spirulina
I wrote above that you can add Spirulina to your morning smoothies to get your day started right. You can also add it to popcorn, salad dressings, fresh juices, and this delectable Spirulina guacamole.
Spirulina Guacamole
- 2 avocados, seeds removed, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup chopped purple onion
- 1 tbsp fresh lime juice
- 2 tbsp Spirulina
- 1 tomato, seeds removed, chopped
Method
Blend everything together into a thick, chunky paste. Serve with tortilla chips.
