The best thing you can do for a depressed person is to try to find something they might be interested in and sharing it with them. Don't be upset if they don't seem to respond but at least it might catch their interest and give them something to focus on other than how bad they feel. Especially if you can get them to do something to help someone else. When they start thinking about someone else the depression stays at bay and sometimes even goes away.
