This also means that players with opt out clauses in their contracts had to exercise them. One of those players was JD Martinez.
The power hitting right handed bat is going to stay in Beantown, at least for one more year. As part of his 5 year deal signed before 2018, he received an opt out after both 2019 and the 2020 season.
By passing on the opt out, Martinez returns to Boston for 23.75 million this year. He receives 19.375 million each of the next two years if he remains. Odds are, if he has another protective season, that he will opt out with two years remaining.
