Leaving the big city life felt right from the moment on I hopped into my van. Heading West, I followed streets that seem endless straight to the region of Madawaska valley. I am using an app called WikiCamps, there I found a place which is labelled as free to stay. Perfect.
When I arrived at the spot, I thought it will just be me and my van. But there was a group of trailers set up and a bunch of people sitting around a campfire. We talked, turns out this place is a family's spot to spend their summertime and see each other. They straight up invited me to sit by the fire, talk, laugh, eat, drink, tell stories. Love it! I really missed these moments of ease far away from civilization.
They asked me if I'd stick around for some days. Yes, it was my plan to stay at this place over the weekend. But I never thought that I would join a bunch of people to spend the days hanging out at the dock, jump into the lake for a swim, having fish they caught for dinner. Their magnanimity was really stunning me. It was such a big contrast to the city, where everyone is following his own daily routine, chasing deadlines, metros, meetings. Here everything is at a much slower pace. Focusing on the things that matter. Sharing what you have with others, even if it's not much.
Places like this have their own magic. There is nothing out there that matters as much as the place you are at and the people you are with. You only have to throw yourself in there and be open for what comes. I really felt the stress wearing off, the stress of missing out on something somewhere else. I got to sit at the dock at night, gazing into the scenery of stars reflecting on the calm lake. And it was OK to just be there doing nothing.
