I've always found the US' love of guns odd. Its a tool designed to kill people. You need a gun for self-defence because everyone has the potential to have a gun. People are allowed to have guns but they get shot by policemen because guns are threatening. Its all so odd and sad.
Also, every time I hear the argument that my freedoms are being oppressed by my tyrannical government because I'm not allowed to bare arms I think they're just being silly. Pretty much everyone accepts that there are limitations to the second amendment and by doing so you'll never be able to take on your government. Which makes the whole thing moot really.
Plus I totally agree that cops shouldn't be carrying guns. It just allows for situations to escalate.
