Alex Andreus, Level 1 Cleric with Wizard stylings, a D&D 5e character ("Need a Character?" Series)

in dnd •  7 years ago  (edited)

For years one of my favorite past-times has been creating characters for RPGs, so today I wanted to start sharing these characters in a new recurring series I call "Need a Character?"

Each post will feature a ready-to-use character at a specific level for a tabletop RPG that you can download and play with.

This character, Alex Andreus, was originally created for a D&D 5e game that took place in Barovia and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Alex is presented below in two formats: the Wizarding World/Barovia version and a Generic version that should fit into most settings.

Alex Andreus
Alex is an almost complete naive: far beyond curious to a fault, possessing very little sense of self-preservation, and lacking in almost any level of squeamishness whatsoever.

Below this is a deep level of nihilism that was fostered by the dark and oppressive land he grew up in. He pushes both his natural proclivity for depression and his learned sense of futility to the back of his mind at almost all times and it tends to come out erratically, usually being quickly overshadowed by some new fascination that comes along.

While he is heroic and seeks to aid the world in whatever way he can, he is just as much driven by a thirst for knowledge that was fostered in him by his parents - a pair of powerful and accomplished Wizards - before they were killed in a tragic attack.

After the death of his parents in his youth, he was cared for by his "uncles" and "aunt," a handful of friends of his parents who had all become trapped in the dark land of his birth. However, they were not natural caregivers and tended to protect him only from external threats, leaving him largely fending for himself on the day-to-day level and the majority of his personal belongings were either salvaged from elsewhere or made by him and show his clear lack of skill as a craftsman. He wears rough-hewn pants and a matching shirt, a suede jacket with the majority of its stitching on the outside, a pair of scuffed boots, and an animal-hide hat with a long tail trailing down the back of his head.

He adds to this strange ensemble a scarf made from what remained of his parents' trademark scarves after the brutal attack that ended their lives and a wand made from their broken wands that he fiddles with in his left hand nearly constantly.

Though he followed the path of the War Cleric, he performs almost all of his actions as though he were a Wizard, almost always channeling his "spells" through his wand as a holy symbol and using arcane words of power rather than divine ones. Not at all a necessity, he often shows his ability to channel his prayers without these trappings in times of need or stress when he will frequently utilize his divine powers through other means. Additionally, he treats all of his spells as though they were wizard spells and thinks of the divine path as merely an alternative version of the divine one.

He believes in no particular god, though he accepts that they may exist, and instead gets his power as a Cleric through his unwavering devotion to a kind of ancestor worship focusing primarily on his parents but also stretching back into the vast history of the Wizard tradition that they came from, treating individual Wizards throughout history as if they were prophets, angels, and gods.

Cool idea! But, no thanks right now. I have three games going simultaneously right now so I don't think I could manage another one at the moment, even one done relatively low-impact through text.

If you end up running one publicly here, or recap it publicly, you should let me know! I'd definitely be interested in reading the adventures.

No problem, enjoy your adventures!
