Doctor Who

Hurrah!! I am a long time fan of Who. I started watching when I was very young, hiding behind the sofa from the Daleks and the Cybermen, on a Saturday afternoon after football final score on the videprinter. Classic Saturday afternoons.

My first Doctor was Jon Pertwee, my favourite of the pre-2005 era is Tom Baker. Both of them were right, as in they knew they were correct, not politically just they had the solution and they were going to execute it - ruthlessly arrogant.

My favourite Doctor is David Tennant, the new style and relationship with his companions, not just the on board ones, but the extended "family" was well written and excellently played.

My favourite episode is Vincent. Why? The Doctor broke a rule, he transported someone to their future, a very famous person. The hope was the actions would change the future - instead nothing changed - or the actions created the future. Did Vincent see his future and became unable to cope with the expectation? It’s a great episode with a cameo from Bill Nighy – nice bow tie.

I never really had a favourite companion until Bill. Bill has been excellent - refreshing. I do hope that the storyline weaves her back in or the writers realise that having her on board suits the future of the program.

And now to 13.

I am a fan of Doctor Who. I don’t care about the gender or sexual preference of any character, I love the program. I am sure the program will be just the same, convoluted stories with some wibbly-wobbly timey wimey stuff. What will happen if River Song makes another appearance? Spoilers…

There is a lot of bollocks being written on the internet about the change to a female doctor from male and female. It is not the end of the world, if you are a fan get on with it, sometimes we like stuff and sometimes we don’t. It is also not a great leap forward for women or feminists. It is a role on TV that until now has been played by a man, and now we will see someone who is talked about as a great actress play the role (I have never seen her in anything so cannot comment). Change is good however it comes, writers, actors/actresses, producers and if for Jodie, Doctor Who is a stepping stone to something else, excellent.

So at Christmas when the barbecue has cooled down and I sit down to watch the Christmas Doctor Who. I will enjoy it, like I have done every Christmas Special. I will be looking forward to the key changing hands and then the new series with Jodie at the controls.

Last thing. For those of you who agree with the bollocks being written about the choice of Jodie think about this…

The way I see it, every Doctor Who is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa the bad things don’t always spoil the good things or make them unimportant. Doctor Who definitely adds to my pile of good things, Jodie will too.
