As flood waters raged during the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, pets were left stranded without food and water in North Carolina.
The Humane Society of Missouri's Disaster Response team was one of many rescue groups who came to help during the aftermath of the hurricane.
Even as flood waters reached the rooftops of houses, the team made a couple attempts to find the home where a dog was reported stranded inside. On the Humane Society's third rescue attempt, the team paddled more than a half mile to the flooded neighborhood. Luckily, the water receded enough to find the address. A white Maltese dog by the name of Soshe was heard barking inside.

The crew did what they could to access the door of the flooded home. Once they were able to reach it, the high waters made it nearly impossible to push open.
The dog had been floating on a couch to stay above water. Initially she was too scared to swim to rescuers. She had been trapped in the house for a week.
Watch as rescuers bravely battle flood waters to save Soshe in the video above.
Revolutionary War soldiers sometimes brought their dogs with them into battle. Such was the case with George Washington and his dog, Sweetlips.
