Christmas dogs at the temple in costume

in dogs •  last year

Some of the more friendly dogs at the temple that have come to know me / us over the years allow us to handle them more than others so we thought it would be fun to celebrate the holidays a bit earlier than normal with some silly head-dresses for them. This is a Buddhist temple so we asked permission and if this would be disrespectful beforehand. The monks said it doesn't matter and to do whatever we want with a bit of a giggle so we had some fun and of course, handed out snacks and belly rubs to any doggo that wanted it.

I am not aware if this particular dog has a name or not, most of the dogs at the temple don't get names because there are just too many of them. I mentioned before that there are an estimated 120+ homeless dogs at the temple complex, but thankfully, due to our mass sterilization program, this number has stabilized and is now under control.

Other dogs were quite curious what this thing was on the dog's head and came over to investigate. Can I eat that? no? Ok, not very interested.

Of course I wanted to get in on the fun as well and this was all good-natured. The particular dogs we put these on are the ones that are the most familiar with us. I do not recommend putting a head dress or even getting too near the face of any stray dog that you do not know. This is a fantastic way to get bit because many dogs are particularly sensitive about something touching their ears or face.

We had to be very quick with our photo taking because if you have a dog, you probably already know that they don't tend to like to have things put on their heads and even with these dogs, they tended to shake them off pretty quickly.

Of course, having some delicious snacks to hand out to them makes their tolerance of the lovely hats last a bit longer. We stuck around for a bit longer to inspect the animals for any potential infections or parasites and were delighted to find out that we found nothing wrong with any of them. The monks who live there all day every day also informed us that they are unaware of any issues and in the past week there have been no new additions to the pack. There is a sign out in front of the temple entrance now that tells people who would potentially drop dogs off that the temple is full and to not do that. Most temples have these signs and they largely go ignored but perhaps the word of our operation here has spread to the local community and people are actually starting to take notice and heed the warning.

We are making great progress at this particular location and it makes us happy to see our hard work pay off well enough that we can celebrate and have a little fun every now and then.
