The average street dog in Thailand has 16 puppies a year

...and unfortunately most of these puppies don't make it to adulthood. They are often abandoned by their mom or the "owners" will dump these puppies at a temple or some distant location far from their birthplace where they are left to fend for themselves. Without the help of mom in their upbringing they have very little chance of survival and even if they achieve that it is more likely that not going to be a life of constant hunger, fear, injury, and sickness. This isn't much of a life at all. This is why we focus primarily on sterilization in our animal-welfare activities.

For the average pet-lover like myself it is difficult to imagine the mind of a person that would simply take this little guy and his siblings and just toss them out somewhere, but this is exactly what happens many many times per month here in Krabi. Thankfully, the community has kind of figured out who we are and we have become the defacto animal control of sorts. Unfortunately, due to years of diminished donations and the entire country be shut down to tourism, we don't have the money to look after these pups and our kennels are overfilled as it is.

We do all that we can for these dogs (and cats) but the sad reality of it is that we have reached the point where we simply cannot help all of them anymore. We unfortunately have to form some sort of triage and help only the most dire cases these days which is sometimes picking and choosing the worst cases and helping them while not helping the others. This normally means determining whether or not the pups are part of a pack, or if their mother is part of their lives anymore. Only if the answer to both of these things are "no" can we really get involved. We wish it wasn't this way but we are already stretched so thin as far as staff and of course money is concerned.

Thankfully we have a great relationship with several temples in the area and while we would never simply drop a dog off there, we do talk to them and ask them if they will at least provide some level of safety and normally they are more than willing to help out all that they can. These temples don't really have any spare resources either as they're already stretched to the limit as well. Normally we are able to find some sort of compromise so the little darlings like the very young pup in the last picture at least has a safe covered stairway to lie down on.

It's not much of a life, but it is a lot better than just lying in the middle of a field somewhere, waiting to die.

When you think about the math involved here with the 16, almost certainly unwanted pups that a mother can have every year, it is easy to understand how this became such a huge problem in Krabi over the past decades. Sadly, when the dogs are pups people are very willing to take them in but for the most part 90% of these same people don't really know what it means to take on a dog and how difficult it will be. In many ways, introducing a temporary "family" to these dogs is worse than if they had just left them alone at the start. When a dog get's used to having someone look after it, it becomes less capable of looking after itself.

Until we can reach some level of population control our main focus will always be sterilization. There is simply too many stray dogs here for the human population to care any more than they do and without any sort of government assistance - there is zero animal control in Thailand - this situation is unlikely to ever change unless groups like ours get involved.
