Week 13 (November 2018)

Welcome to Domains in the Wild. In this series I post images of domain names that I've spotted out and about in the real world. Then I write a bit about what I think of each one. It's easy to miss domain names, but they're all around us and play a key role in a companies branding, messaging and design. Spotting them and taking a photo is sort of a fun hunting game to play while you're out and it takes very little effort once you start looking for them. Once you start to play, you will start seeing domains everywhere without even trying.

If you catch any yourself, please share them with us all in the comments.

Without further delay, here are the domain names that I found in the wild recently...

The Domains

The theme today is sidewalk signs. I have been finding a lot of these lately as the weather has been so nice to get out and go for walks. They seem to be a pretty popular spot to put a domain name. When designing a sidewalk sign there must be a rule that says you have to include the domain name. The only time you don't see a domain on one of these types of signs is if it's a simple, "Open" sign or one of those chalkboard signs that restaurants use to write down today's specials... otherwise it's a must.

Anyway, here are the domains in the wild.

LiveAtTheEddy.com

The first domain is LiveAtTheEddy.com. This domain belongs to an apartment building that rents in the Green Lake neighborhood in Seattle. They are pet friendly and allow larger dogs which is nice, because as much as Seattle claims to be pet friendly it's very hard to find apartments that allow large breed dogs. Really any dog over 25 pounds becomes a challenge when apartment shopping in Seattle.

As far as the domain goes, it's okay. I mean the building is called, the Eddy so it works I guess. I would have liked to see something shorter with less words though. I also don't like when one word ends with the same letter as the next word. In this case the 'e' at the end of 'the' matches up with the 'e' in the word 'eddy'. This can be tricky when things are all upper or lowercase. See for yourself, liveattheeddy.com and LIVEATTHEEDDY.COM

BellWetherHousing.org

Next up is BellWetherHousing.org. This is the domain for a low income housing company in Seattle. They offer affordable housing and have a few different developments throughout Seattle.

The domain is just okay. It's a bit long and doesn't easily pass the radio test in my opinion because you will probably have to explain the spelling of the word 'wether'. It would be nice to find something shorter. I do think the use of the .org fits it though based on what the company does.

ASeattleChurch.com

112018-1.jpg

Finally we have ASeattleChurch.com. This is the domain for a Christian church located in the South Lake Union area of Seattle.

This domain is fine, it's an exact match of their name which is good. However, I don't particularly like the name. It's the 'a' at the beginning that I take issue with because it seems unnecessary and sort of an obstacle to get around when saying the name but that's just my opinion. The .com is great, but a .org would also be fine here in my opinion.

Well, that concludes this edition of Domains in the Wild.
