Donald Trump's odd gesture could make this the most awkward image of him and Melania yet

A picture may paint a thousand words, but it can also leave you grasping at straws for an explanation sometimes.

Take, for example, a recent photo of Donald Trump, Melania, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen.

The Not-So-Fab Four recently attended a memorial service for evangelical preacher Billy Graham, who died aged 99 in February.

Now, while there is vast trove of awkward photo opportunities between Number 45 and First Lady Melania Trump , this one might be the strangest yet.

What's going on here?
During the service, we see Trump reach out and...touch Pence on the thigh.

Did he mean to pat Melania's knee?

Was Pence feeling particularly sad?

The Cut also speculated: "Was it a gesture of reassurance? A warning? We may never know."

If the gesture was intended for Pence (who has been famously outspoken on LGBT rights), then it's a rare physical sign from Trump of his esteem for his Number Two.

Though we have to say, Pence doesn't look too chuffed.

It seems Trump had enough affection for everyone during the memorial.

He later extended the hand again to give his wife a reassuring pat on the knee.
