So the movie is about the parallel universe of quantum mechanics which is very difficult to understand. If you do not understand after watching the movie, then this is for you.
The movie is based on the book The Philosophy of Time Travel, the pages of which are shown in the movie. At the beginning then you have to clear a few concepts.
I will not give spoilers, I will only clear a few concepts to understand the movie
The Tangent Universe:
The universe we live in is the primary universe that is stable, so there is no problem in its existence. But sometimes Tangent Universe is created for Time Corrupt or 4th Dimensional Construct. It's just a copy of the Primary Universe.
This Universe is Highly Unstable. So after some time I destroyed myself. But with some exceptions, black holes will be created which can destroy the Tangent Universe as well as the Primary Universe.
In this movie too, on the night of 2nd October, Tangent Universe was created for Time Corruption which will remain in existence for the next 28 days. The rest of the movie continues in this universe.
The Artifact.
When Tangent Universe is created, Artifact comes from somewhere which means Tangent Universe has been created. The artifact in the movie is the engine that falls on Donnie Darko's room.
This is where the Tangent Universe came from. Since Tangent Universe is an exact copy of our primary, the engine was already in Tangent Universe.
But at the time of construction, it came from the Primary Universe and now the Tangent Universe is no longer an exact copy. Now if it is not taken out of the Tangent Universe then when the Tangent Universe is destroyed it will also take our primary universe to a black hole.
So at the end of the movie, we send the Donnie Darko engine to the primary universe through a portal, so that the Tangent Universe becomes an exact copy of our universe again and the Tangent Universe is destroyed.
The Living Receiver:
Only when the Tangent Universe is created is the Living Receiver determined whose job it is to remove that artifact from the Tangent Universe. Donnie Darko is the Living Receiver in this movie.
Because the epicenter of the Tangent Universe was his room. So the living receiver is given some super power and it includes mind control, power, fire lighting etc.
He also uses his power in movies. At last he sent Artifact to the Primary Universe with all his might
Manipulated Dead:
Those who die at Tangent Universe are Manipulated Dead. They help the Living Receiver by time travel. In this movie 2 Gretchen, Frank who died in Tangent Universe. Later they help Donnie with time travel.
So the horror character that is shown in the movie is Frank. Gretchen travels to the past and becomes Donnie's girlfriend.
Manipulated Living:
Those who help the living receiver directly or indirectly in the Tangent Universe.
The Insurance Trap:
Manipulated Living and Dead combine to create a trap that forces the Living Receiver to do its job. If you watch the movie, you will understand how Donnie did such a thing.
So it is not a tie conincidence but a trap to see the school filled with water or with Gretchen. For Gretchen's death, however, Donnie kills Frank, leaving Frank a Manipulated Dead, and time travel.
