In your view which of the following statements is the chief aim of marriage?

The chief aim of marriage varies from culture to culture and possibly from time to time.

In some cultures marriage is seen as the propagation of the male progeny.

In some other cultures marriages are conducted purely to retain family wealth within, say, two families.

Then there are marriages that are conducted mainly for the fulfillment of religious duties.

In some cultures temporary marriages (say, for 3 hours, 1 day etc.) is allowed just to satisfy the sexual urges of consenting adults who do not want a permanent arrangement.

You could think of many more, but what would you consider is the chief aim of marriage?

Pick your choice:

  • Fellowship, companionship, mutual help and comfort.

  • Procreation for the propagation of family lineage.

  • Procreation as insurance for old age support.

  • Fulfillment of religious duties.

  • Sexual pleasure.

  • To grow in selflessness and to love your spouse and his/her family as your own which then becomes the stepping stone to love everyone else.

  • Others (Please Specify).

I think 'Fellowship, companionship, mutual help and comfort' and 'To grow in selflessness and to love you spouse and his/her family as your own which then becomes the stepping stone to love everyone else' would be nice but probably not the true aim of marriage. 'Procreation for the propagation of family lineage' is probably more likely for most cultures.

I think many people actually get married because they feel obliged to be accepted by society. However, I wouldn't like to call that the chief aim.

Thanks for the vote and upvote, @spectrumecons.

We could approach this question from many angles (cultural, philosophical, economic, religious, spiritual and so on).

Hopefully that will make the answers interesting.

Thanks again for you input.

You are the first one to vote for "Procreation for the propagation of family lineage." I wonder whether this is the chief aim of marriage in your own culture? Would be interesting to know the details.

From where I came from, marriage is considered to be sacred and a respectful ceremony. When a couple decided to get married, they are meant to be together for the rest of their life and stay committed to one another.

Thanks for the vote, @funtraveller. Marriage used to be a sacred and respectful ceremony in many cultures throughout the world. That is slowly changing now. It is nice to hear that in your culture marriage is still considered sacred and respectful and couples commit themselves for their lives.

Voted for To grow in selflessness and to love your spouse and his/her family as your own which then becomes the stepping stone to love everyone else..

I would place the above as the chief aim and "Fellowship, companionship, mutual help and comfort" as the secondary aim.

I am of the view that when you consider "To grow in selflessness and to love your spouse and his/her family as your own which then becomes the stepping stone to love everyone else." as the chief aim, the secondary aim of "Fellowship, companionship, mutual help and comfort" is automatically taken care of.
