Who or what must the self driving car run over

At the end of last year, I was listening to a radio program while driving to work in my car.

The program was about the moral dilemma a self driving car's programmer would face. In the event of an emergency where the car has no choice but to run over somebody or something, what or who does the car choose to run over?

Obviously the poll as described above, was quite a bit more complicated than mine as the gave choices between A/B and A/C and B/C etc.

In my pole you must just choose, what or who must the car run over!!

Let us see who will be killed by the car, in your opinion!!

  • Cute kitten

  • Homeless person

  • Pregnant lady

  • Cuddly puppy

  • Child playing on the pavement

  • Drunk and dirty man

  • Elderly person

  • Beautiful girl

@rynow,
Beautiful Girl!

Cheers~

You might be crucified for running over the girl!!

How the hell can someone answer this?....

That was exactly the point, because somebody must program the car's decision making process and how do you do it. The real poll obviously was much more scientific than this one, I just thought that this was a very interesting real life example of the moral issues facing AI. (What would happen if a real animal lover program the car to rather run over one of the humans??)

Why the puppy? Well, I'll outline the why.

Cute kitten - more useful than the puppy; they are natural pest control (not to mention they are smarter)
Homeless person - Better him than the puppy, but the driver would go to jail
Pregnant lady - even if the lady were a bad person, useless or a burden, the baby still gets to have his chance in life to better the world
Cuddly puppy - although probably harmful, he's also probably worthless when considered for any other purpose than the emotional
Child playing on the pavement - A child who is stupid enough to play on the pavement should probably deserve to get killed, but the driver would go to jail
Elderly person - you kill them, you go to jail
Beautiful girl - you kill her, you go to jail

If the driver were safe from going to jail, I would choose the drunk and dirty man. He's harming society already.

Thank you very much for the nice explanation, of how you arrived at your answer.

What? What are doing so many people at once on the street? :)

Obviously humans should be protected first. Children first, ladies firs... But you first, or they first? I think new laws or ethic codices must be created, like the famous laws of the robotics:

First Law – A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law – A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law – A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
(Asimov)

But such complicated situations are, in reality, rare.

This is just an example to demonstrate the complexities in programming these self driving car's decision making process.
