I think he needs to back out and plan since he's not with his weapon, he need to device other means to ensure he overcome his troublesome enemy.
Once he do that, he can take his sword and arrow to further defend himself...

Since we know now our hero is brave enough to fight barges and looking at the barge our hero should do it quick since the barge is in shock as well and it seems it doesn't hold a weapon.

I think he should throw the spear to the barge, it will be an instant move.If the spear miss him, don't worry he also have a sword.
