Dream Amnesia? Learn how to remember your dreams

in dream •  8 years ago  (edited)

Dream amnesia, in everyday life is extremely common. In fact, we forget more of our dreams than what we can remember in daily life, surprising because we all dream every night, about one dream session of 45 minutes to an hour long every 90 minutes apart. It is also possible to have more than one dream during what is called a REM dream period. A REM is generally separated by short wakening arousal's that are most often forgotten. It is accepted amongst sleep researchers that most dreams are not recalled unless the sleeper awakens directly from the dream making a conscious effort to recall.

People who say they never dream simply never remember their dreams.

Don't you just hate it when you're having one of those intense dreams, filled with wonderful sights and sounds that are so vivid, you don't actually realize you're asleep. And then all of a sudden...BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, the all familiar nagging sound of your alarm pulling you back to the reality of the waking world.

As you rise, your dream steadily fades away, our daily routine and reality of everyday life unfolds as we continue with everyday living and the realities of the waking world.

Many people believe that dreams can provide insights into our lives and feelings. In my previous posts I have covered how important dreaming can be with' Dreams that have changed fundamental history', but the trouble is dreams can be difficult to sometimes remember.

With some conscious effort you can remember more of your dreams and recall them in greater detail if you practice. Below are some great tips to help you to better remember your dreams, and therefore have a basis to become better at the interpretation your of dreams as you then will have dreams to interpret!

Dream Journal

It can be useful while you begin developing your dream recall to keep a dream journal next to your bed and record every dream possible, no matter how fragmentary. Start by writing down all your dreams, not just the complete, coherent, or interesting ones, even if all you remember is a face or a room for example, write it down.

Plan for a good nights sleep

It is very important to get a good night's sleep. Dreams occur when our bodies are in the sleeping stage known as REM, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement. The body is completely at rest, but the mind is active and dreams. If you don't get enough sleep at night, or your sleep is interrupted a lot, you get less REM sleep, and fewer dreams. Try going to bed every night at the same time if possible, and waking up at the same time every morning, to make sure you're getting the right kind of rest and routine.

Don't eat, drink alcohol or take medication right before bed

Food, alcohol and medication can affect your brain's chemistry and ability to remember your dreams. Try not to ingest anything for at least a two hours before going to bed. This will ensure that nothing interferes with your memory or your sleep patterns.

Make a conscious decision to remember your dreams.

You have got a much chance of remembering your dreams if you really want to remember them. Assuming you do want to, tell yourself that you’re going to remember your dreams and conscientiously follow the steps to make your desire to remember your dreams come true.

Avoid exercising before going to bed.

As we all know getting regular exercise is good for our overall health reducing your stress levels, and can help you sleep at night. However, exercise has a stimulating effect, so you should not engage in strenuous activity near your bedtime. Otherwise, you may have trouble falling asleep or wake constantly, which can ruin your chances of having dreams .

In Conclusion

Remember your intentions and get yourself into the spirit of remembering your dreams, read through your dream journal at bedtime before you sleep. Learning to remember your dreams may seem difficult at first, but if you persist, you will almost certainly succeed. With enough practice you will be able to remember many dreams per night. Of course, once you have reached this level, you probably won't want to write them down. The more familiar you become with the style and art of your own dreams, the easier it will be to remember you are dreaming while you are dreaming and explore the world of your dreams while still on the scene.
