Saalfeld wurde im Jahre 899 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt und gehört damit zu den ältesten Gründungen Ostthüringens.
Zu sehen ist die größte Kirche der Stadt und eine der größten Hallenkirchen Thüringens ist die gotische Johanneskirche, die evangelische Stadtkirche Saalfelds.
Die Marktapotheke, bis 1992 im Besitz der Familie Arndt, in einem massiven Wohnturm von 1468, Die heutige Marktapotheke war im Mittelalter erster Sitz des Stadtvogts.
Das Rathaus am Marktplatz entstand nach dem Stadtbrand von 1517 in der Zeit zwischen 1529 und 1537 und gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Renaissance-Rathäuser Thüringens.
Amtsgefängnis „Hutschachtel“ Der turmartige Rundbau wurde als Gefängnis nach den Plänen des meiningischen Landbaumeisters Carl Rudolf Tröger von 1857 bis 1859 gebaut und kostete 14500 Gulden. Am 25. November 1859 erfolgte die Übergabe als Amtsgefängnis an das Herzogtum Sachsen-Meiningen. Bis 1950 wurde es noch von den Nationalsozialisten und später der sowjetischen Militäradministration als Gefängnis genutzt. 1973 übernahm die Stadt Saalfeld das Gebäude und nutzte es nach dem Umbau als Stadtarchiv.
