It's Late November Already? A DSnap of My Garden in Late Spring

in dsnap •  6 years ago  (edited)

Gosh I love Spring - it's just the most beautiful time of the year. We're getting to the tail end of it now with 10 days to Summer, but there's still lots of flowers around. We're noticing it's getting more dry, so we're trying to prepare the garden for the summer heat. In this #dsnapplus I take you for a quick spin around my garden in response to @simplymike's #gardenjournal2018 challenge. I think I missed last month, which is a bit disappointing - it's really fun to join in this challenge and see what is happening in other people's gardens. You can read her invitation to post about your garden here. We'll be doing #gardenjournal2019 before long, @simplymike!

Harvest Bounty

Have pickled tons of beetroots and garlic scapes, and pulled up all of my garlic - some really big bulbs this year! A lot of things are going to seed so I'm letting the bees feast and giving a lot of stuff to the new chickens (yes, I have new chookies - so excited!). Coriander, spring onions and fennel have all gone to seed, but I'll leave those to self seed next year by shaking the seeds all over the garden. We've had lots of delicious artichokes this year too - now I'm letting them flower as they will look so amazing!

Climbing Things

The grape vines are doing great - J. trimmed them and put new wires up around the vegetable patch for them to climb on, and they will protect the garden a little by providing shade. I've been planting a lot of climbing things for that reason - two varieties of pumpkin, some lebanese cucumber, a few varieties of melons. The hops are going crazy as well - I can hardly keep them under control!

Fruit

Looks like it'll be a great season for fruit again - it's fun to take stock of just exactly how much we have - apples, pears, mandarins, limes, lemons, quinces, apricots, plums and nectarines! Oh, and plus blackcurrants, redcurrants, raspberries, elderberries and blueberries. What a feast!

Being Water Wise

The wicking beds are working brilliantly - really pleased with them. Capsicums, basil, corn, chilli, cucamelons, cucumbers, tomatoes and jalepeno are all doing well with the constant supply of water. I've also done some ollas, which I'll dtube about later in the week. The eggplants are particularly doing well with that extra bit of water the terracotta vessels provide. I'm glad we've got the chooks now as they pick through the straw, fertilise it a little and then we can layer that on the compost and in the garden. We managed to get a ton of mulch (literally) on the native beds so they should be okay.

I hope you enjoyed this little video tour of my garden. You can here me say 'oop' when J. suprises me by not being in the shed for a change. Did you spot him?

What's going on in your gardens?

I'm always stunned by how much you've got going on in your garden, @riverflows.
I'll be watching your video later today (I'm sitting in a doctor's waiting room at the moment so it's a bit difficult to watch video here, lol), but I'm sure it'll be amazing again.

Do you know? I also have hobbies like yours, which is like taking care of your garden. And in the garden will be a variety of flowers and fruits.

Amazing. Where do you live?

Aren't artichoke flowers amazing? I really loved your list of fruits available now! Apricots would be my favorite.

That's a forest, not a garden! Need help harvesting those stuff River?
There's not much happening on ours, just planting a few fruit trees. I might be robably dead by the time they'll fruits but hey, the young ones will benefit for sure.

Haha yep it's a kinda jungle sometimes! Oh your fruit trees will be fruiting before you know it!! Promise!!

well i've planted 3 each of 2 varieties, like 5in
in height, not grafted. Am gonna let 1 grow like a bonsai and see what happens. Even 1 of them having fruits when am old would be nice😂🤣

omg! I just love everything about this. I want to come live IN your garden. I am quite enamoured with those artichokes and everything looks so green and vibrant! Love this so much.

Aah! The layouts of your gardens are so beautiful and peaceful! What's the tub for? I just love the video tour, and you can see in your face how fulfilling this is for you. Just love it!!
I really like the walkways and how you creatively use plants as shade to protect the other plants. I get so many fantastic ideas on here but lordy I could live in your garden!!

Oh the tub is our fire bath!!! I will light it up on the weekend and make a video of me in the bath ha ha ha. It is very important to create shade here to protect the other plants and make the garden genuinely that little bit cooler. I wish I had time energy and money to make the whole 5 acres a landscape garden. Wouldn't that be something?

Fire bath??? Neeeeed this in my liiiiife

I will put firebath as priority #2 in 100khomesteadchallenge just after water (to fill my fire bath duh) . Lol

And yes, 5 acres of landscape would be incredible. You could give tours and maybe it would eventually pay for itself! Ps might wanna use that bobcat! ;)

Oh the tub is our fire bath!!! I'm a light it up on the weekend and do another Post

Wonderful I wish I have the kinda space. You've put a lot of effort in. I any working towards getting some land, my time will come 💯🐒

We are still amazed we were lucky enough to get this place! Good luck!

Posted using Partiko Android

You've done well my time is coming 💯🐒

We are adding a looooong walk around your garden to the list when I get my butt back to Oz in the next 12 months. :) A lovely post, my dear. Makes me feel the need to grab my machete and start slashing at my own little jungle here... :)

Are you coming to Australia? Wow that would be amazing.

My sister is dying and my mom is 82. Ploi and I feel a "must go" is on our list. We're committed to Hong Kong and Korea in March-April 2019. Loosely thinking October 2019 but could be much sooner than that, but is a funds-wiling equation. All things are possible. Oz is probable, almost def. Just the when is a little up in the air. :)

my god that red flower you walked by a few times?? i am so glad to have a friend with a beautiful garden across the world so i can enjoy the freshness of blooms through the screen when my own garden is died back. love you

It's a variety of pigface..a succulent. The huge blocks of colour are extraordinary ... I plant it as a kind.of filler and it's stupidly easy to propagate. It's a bit of a showpony in Spring!

I love your garden it is so lush and I love the layout and your chill out areas, Oh how I would love to come take a walk in your garden some time and sit under some of those lovely gum trees. So so great to see your beautiful self too xxx

Thanks lovely!! We did design it to include little pathways and various spots to hang. It's really grown and turned out better than we thought. Lots of trees to plant still! One day maybe you will visit again!

Nice to have best time for growing things again @riverflow. I am planting some squashes, but it is a rainy season here, and those insects/bugs are getting crazy :D

Good reminder to get something flowing on my now-empty balcony!

But uhhhh Dsnap? Whats that?

Lol... I don't know. Apparently it's a one minute Dtube.

It's wonderful to be able to feel someones excitement for the spring and the lush new growth when your on the other side of the world buried in snow!
You've got a lot happening on your acreage there, such selections of fruits! I only wish!
Love your pathways and stone edging. You can tell a lot of work went into it.
Glad your wicking beds are working out. It's a great idea for dryer areas.
Thanks so much for sharing the going ons in your garden and the fine example of how much you can actually get into a minute and a half Dsnap!
