Mediodía en el llano (Noon on the plain): Venezuelan music for the world

It is a pleasure for me to present in this interesting musical field a work by Venezuelan master composer Antonio Estevez, it is about the Symphonic Evocation Mediodía en el llano. This work is of a marked nationalist character that is approaching, rather to an Elegy where the suggestion-reminiscence of the Venezuelan plains is clearly perceived and refers to the enormous herds of cattle that the Venezuelan “llaneros” herded to those great extensions of land, in colonial times, in the style of the best cowboy in the United States.

The composer Antonio Estevez was born in Calabozo, Guárico State in Venezuela on January 3, 1916 and died in Caracas on November 26, 1988. Estevez composed this work in 1942 and initially, was part of the central movement of his Suite Llanera (Dawn, Noon and Sunset), later in 1948 eliminated the extreme movements of the Suite leaving the central movement and calling it Noon on the plain as we know it. Although the work seems the most arid of the Suite, it is also the most Venezuelan. Noon on the plain is one of the first pieces written by Estevez and has a very impressionistic style influenced, perhaps, by Debussy, with slow moments and beautiful melodies with different colors. Estevez wanted the maestro, with this work, to pay homage to the land that saw him born.

It is my pleasure to offer you, on this occasion, this masterpiece of the Venezuelan nationalist academic repertoire performed by the Simon Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and directed by Gustavo Dudamel.
