-Dale Carnegie

Welcome back to Mid-Day Motivation with @JustLibby! Every day I provide inspiring quotes by some the world's most influential men and women of all time!

Perhaps you aren't aware of Dale Carnegie and his lasting impact on the world. Known for his books like How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, Carnegie is considered the best-selling self-help authors to date.

What makes Carnegie so significant in the self-development arena, is his path to success from his humble beginnings. Born in the late 1880s to impoverished farmers in Missouri, he woke up every morning at 4 am to milk the family's cows.

In high school, Carnegie frequently attended assemblies where rural communities gathered to watch popular speakers, musicians, entertainers, and preachers. He was inspired by the speakers and he decided to join the school's debate team.

After graduating from high school, he attended the local State Teachers College. His family was too poor to afford the $1 a day for room and board so Carnegie would ride horseback to school and practice reciting speeches on the way.

When he graduated from college, he took a job as a traveling salesman in Nebraska and saved up $500. He quit the job to move to New York City to be an actor. Even though Carnegie didn't get his break, he was a very good public speaker. In fact, many students offered to pay him to teach them public speaking. He realized that this skill was what helped him succeed as a salesman and began teaching classes for adults to the YMCA. The classes were an immediate success and in just 2 years he founded the Dale Carnegie Institute. Source

After two decades of teaching, writing and researching, Carnegie released How to Win Friends and Influence People. While it wasn't an instant success, the book has sold over 30 million copies in its 75 plus years of print.

So what does Carnegie's quote mean to you? Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.

For me, it means that success comes from our achievements while happiness is gained by our appreciation for what we have attained. There are plenty of successful people out there with their wealth and social status, however, many feel the lack of wholeness that true happiness provides.

In my opinion, to feel satisfaction in life, a sense of gratitude for what we have gained is essential.

How about you? Are you feeling grateful for where you are in your life?

Thanks so much for reading this post and listing to my podcast on @dsound! Talk to you tomorrow in the next mid-day motivation!
