Piano With Rosa: Improvise on the Em7 sweet Chord

in dsound •  7 years ago

With the new development of dsound audio, I want to support them by sharing some music with the Steemians. It is good to listen to some music in this Steemit site because music can carry us very far in our creativity, especially when it comes to blogging creatively.

One of the ways to play creatively at the piano is to learn to improvise. Improvisation is to 'make your own music' at the piano. Don't follow any sheet music. Use your heart to play and listen to the sounds that come out of your playing. In this recording, I improvised on the Em chord only. Em7 chord is a very special chord that sounds good on the piano. The Em7 chord has E G B D notes. Let your fingers flow on these notes in any order. That's it. That's why we call it improvisation. You make music along the way and creat the mood by playing these notes in different rhythm. There is no hard and fast rules as to how fast or how slow the music goes. It is all up to you and that's why we call it improvisation. The quickest way to learn to improvise is to restrict yourself to one chord first. When you have too many chords to play, you will be thinking too much about the chord progression. Try playing only the Em7 chord - forward and backward and see what happens. Let your creative juice comes out as you listen to this chord played in different order. This is the quickest way to get my students to improvise on the piano. They often get stuck as they do not know what to do. My reply to them is: Just play those 4 notes in Em7 in any order and in any tempo. Put yourself into the music as you move your fingers and see what happens. They take a deep breath and start playing only the Em7 chord. That's what I do with no practice. You can do it too.

Here in this recording, I show you how Em7 sounds on the piano when you improvise freely. Be playful!

Yours will be different. It is your song so it will have your signature sound. Mine has my signature sound. Hope you enjoy listening to this.

Well i like it. Nice sound and flow @rosatravels and you are right...one has to let go during improvisation. ☺

Thanks @beatseb. The most difficult part in improvisation is to 'let go' because we are too anxious that what we play doesn't sound good.

You are welcome @rosatravels and that is very true. Some of my best melodies are written when I let go, so I definitely know what you are talking about. ☺

I like very much how you play with your melodic phrasing over the bass ostinato. After all these decades, I very nearly CAN'T play in any disciplined fashion to what's on the page.

Thank you. I have to find the easiest way to get students to free play. This method works.

I constantly ask my students, what's the big deal about improvisation when playing? You don't plan your conversations (very often at all)...Why is it hard to sit and bang out some random notes and pick the ones that sound good (or at least interesting)?
